MariaDB Corporation and SkySQL, the licensees of MariaDB, jointly announced on January 2, 2015, that SkySQL would take over the sponsorship and management of the MariaDB Foundation. The MariaDB Foundation says that since MariaDB will be owned by SkySQL, the community-led status of the project is no longer relevant. SkySQL and MariaDB Corporation Ab also announced a joint-venture to develop a commercial MariaDB version of Google's Spanner that will be marketed to the commercial MySQL customers. Failing to find an alternative position, the MariaDB Foundation decided to keep the trademark, so a non-profit foundation was formed to keep the trademark and continue working on the MariaDB server. In 2013, MariaDB and SkySQL negotiated the transfer of the MariaDB trademark and the licensing of the MariaDB technology back to the MariaDB Foundation. The MariaDB Foundation relaunched the MariaDB server under a new fixed-term perpetual license that makes MariaDB freely available to commercial users. The MariaDB license is based on the MySQL license, but adds new exclusive rights, like perpetual source code availability, right to receive royalties, etc.

MariaDB 10 is an enterprise-ready relational database platform, and considered an alternative to MySQL and PostgreSQL. It supports schemaless, is ACID compliant, and uses foreign keys, stored procedures, triggers, views, and replication.
